President Obama has issued a proclamation making Thursday, May 3, America's annual National Day of Prayer.
The document calls on Americans to pray for all U.S.
troops and their families. It also says America "protects the religious
freedom of all people."
The National Day of Prayer Task Force said tens of
thousands of prayer events are scheduled across the country Thursday.
This year, there's a 35 percent increase in scheduled prayer events.
Tomorrow marks the 61st annual National Day of Prayer, which was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress.
In 1988, President Reagan designated the first
Thursday of May as the annual observance. As they do each year,
Americans will gather in Washington, D.C., and in towns and cities all
over the country to pray for the nation.
This year's theme, "One Nation Under God" emphasizes
the biblical truth found in Psalm 33:12, "Blessed is the nation whose
God is the Lord."
